Static vs dynamic QR codes: the one difference that matters
A static QR code has your destination address encoded directly in the pattern. A dynamic QR code encodes a short link that redirects to a destination you can change. That's the entire difference, and it decides almost everything else.

What's actually stored in the pattern
Every QR code is just a grid of black and white modules encoding a piece of text. For a static code, that text is your full destination — a URL, a WiFi credential string, a vCard. Once printed, that text cannot change; it's physically part of the pattern.
For a dynamic code, the text encoded is a short URL such as https://123qr.net/r/abc123. That short URL points to a record on a server, and that record holds your real destination. Change the record, and every printed copy of the code now leads somewhere new — without a new image.

Error correction and pattern density
QR codes carry built-in error correction so a scanner can still read them even if part of the code is dirty, torn or covered by a small logo. There are four levels — L (about 7% of the code can be damaged and still recover), M (about 15%), Q (about 25%) and H (about 30%). Higher correction means a denser, more complex pattern for the same amount of data.
This is where URL length matters directly. A static code encoding a long destination URL, especially one full of tracking parameters, needs more modules to hold that text. More modules means smaller individual squares at any given print size, which means the code needs to be printed larger or scanned from closer to work reliably.

Which to choose, and when
- Choose dynamic for anything printed in volume, anything you'll want to update, and anything you want to measure — menus, packaging, signage, flyers, business cards.
- Choose static only if the destination will genuinely never change and you don't need scan data — a fixed WiFi password on a personal router, a one-off document that won't be revised.
- If you're unsure which you'll need, default to dynamic. The downside of a dynamic code is small; the downside of discovering a static code needs an update after 5,000 copies are printed is not.
The trade-off of depending on a redirect service
Being honest about dynamic codes: they add a dependency. The printed pattern only contains a short link, so if the service hosting that link goes offline or the account is deleted, the code stops working even though nothing about the printed material changed.
This is a real cost, not a hypothetical one. It's the price of editability and analytics. Static codes have no such dependency — once printed, they work as long as the destination itself exists, with nothing else in between.
Common questions
- Can I tell just by looking whether a QR code is static or dynamic?
- Not reliably by eye, but you can scan it with your phone's camera before printing anything and check the preview URL. If it shows a short-link domain like 123qr.net/r/..., it's dynamic. If it shows your actual destination directly, it's static.
- Do dynamic QR codes cost more to create?
- On 123QR, no — creating dynamic codes, editing destinations and viewing scan analytics are all free.
- Is a dynamic QR code slower to scan?
- The extra redirect hop adds a small delay, generally not noticeable to a person scanning, since the redirect happens before any page content loads.
- Which type should I use for a restaurant menu?
