Check the specific requirements for your product category and market before treating a linked page as a substitute for anything mandatory.
Where a linked page adds genuinely extra detail — full ingredient sourcing, extended nutritional breakdowns, batch and traceability lookups — it's a good use of the format, since packaging space is limited and a page can carry as much detail as needed.
Printing on curved and small surfaces
- A code wrapped around a curved surface like a bottle or can needs distortion-testing before the full run prints — the pattern can misread if the curve stretches modules unevenly. Ask your printer for a proof on the actual container, not a flat mockup.
- On small packaging (sachets, small boxes, blister packs), keep the module count low by using a short link — this is one reason a dynamic code with a compact URL scans more reliably at small sizes than a code carrying a long destination address.
- Leave the quiet zone (the blank margin around the code) intact even when space is tight. A code crammed edge-to-edge against other printed elements is a common cause of failed scans on small packaging.
Contrast and material
Matte finishes scan more reliably than high-gloss or foil, which can create glare that confuses a camera's autofocus. If the brand needs a glossy or metallic finish, print the code itself on a matte spot varnish or a plain white patch rather than directly on the reflective material.
Dark-on-light is the safest contrast choice. Light-on-dark ('inverted') codes can work but are more sensitive to print quality and lighting, so test them under the lighting conditions the product will actually be viewed in — a store shelf, a dim pantry, a delivery box.
